White to Earth is a publication with text and photographs by Marte Johnslien, Principle Investigator of 'The Materiality of White.' The book was published in connection with her final doctoral exhibition at ROM for kunst og arkitektur, which took place 21 January – 23 February 2020.
The book is a textual and visual narrative about TiO2. Johnslien's history begins where the industrial production of TiO2 was developed around 1910, in the ilmenite mine Titania in Rogaland county. From there, she follows the material to the sister factory in Fredrikstad, Kronos Titan. Here, ilmenite is converted into titanium dioxide and exported all over the world.
